Buckaroos buck Bushies in Metro Opener

Spring is here, and so is Footy. The Ohio State team prevailed Saturday against the Columbus team with a score of 36-23, with a slow first half that fueled a fast paced end to the first match of the season, Spring Metro Round 1.

New members anxiously awaited the first pitch of the game while Scott “Scoota” Matheson, head coach of all three of the teams in the Columbus league, gave a quick speech before the match started. Kicking and jeering, players worked their way through the first half, pacing themselves in lieu of the cold Columbus morning with cautious plays and short passes.

By the second half, emotions had escalated and the field was a flurry of fast-paced activity, the players a blur of tackles and 50 yard passes. Marks stumbled and fell into piles trying to catch the quick passes.

“We did start out a bit slow, but for a lot of the guys it was their first real match,” said Matheson, “they did well though, I’m proud of them.”

The ball sailed through the air for several rounds towards the end of the final quarter, with many players finding themselves caught up in the intensity and brawling for control of the ball. In the final scuffle, Columbus player Ray Newsom was down with a twisted knee. He was led off the field to take a breather, but by the end of the match was walking it off, despite its purplish hue.

“I just had surgery on it a little while ago,” said Newsom, “it was already kind of tender.”

Both teams excelled in their first match and are anticipating the upcoming games this season. Spring Metro Round 2 is Saturday, March 28th at Tuttle Park in Columbus Ohio at 11 A.M.
